This LP finds pianist at a transitional point in his career. Was the new drummer in his trio and, although veteran was on bass during the earlier of the two sessions, he would depart by 1966 (after 15 years) and be replaced. However, the basic sound of remained unchanged ( was the dominant voice anyway) and the personality of the group remained intact. Contributed three originals (including the hard-swinging title cut) to this program and also sounds typically fine on 'Let's Fall in Love,' 'The Shadow of Your Smile,' 'If I Were a Bell,' and a definitive version of 'Stella by Starlight.'

Oscar uses a 4 beat approach pattern to target the 3rd (D) on beat 1 off the Bb7 chord. He does this by starting his approach or “set up” on beat 3 of bar 2. By setting up this chord change early Oscar’s line has a definite sense of forward motion. You’ll often find this forward motion technique inside and chord progressions. I purchased this nice book and I'm really impressed by the contain. I think this is a 'all you must know about jazz riffs'book. The possibility to ear the songs is a very good gift to the pianist who likes to learn by ear with a book.

• Read Sheet Music Plus's complete. One of the best blues sheet music books i've ever bought. CD is invaluable and great to jam along to. Sure, most songs are for a trio but its not to hard to work out a baseline, and although the riffs look scary, its easy to change or simplify. (this is jazz after all!!) and making it your own sounds like oscars ghost is passing through you.
