For efficient drum brake operation, replace the hold-down and return springs, and self-adjuster mechanisms whenever brake shoes are replaced. Replacing brake hardware is an important part of a complete brake job, one that will provide a lasting repair and the stopping power you expect. But instead of just restoring brake performance, our brake hardware is often an upgrade over OEM. Our brake hardware manufacturers are always thinking of new ways to improve brake performance and durability.

These are consumable components in a, not only because of rust and wear, but because the anti-rattle features can fatigue over time. New abutment clips are being used on some new vehicles that help to push the pads back from the rotor to reduce drag and allow for less wear on the pads and rotors. Failing to renew these components as part of a brake job could reduce the life of the brake job and increase comebacks. Caliper Guide Pin Boots Most floating brake parts and use a rubber or plastic insulator or shim around the mounting bolts of the caliper. This sleeve of soft material loses resiliency over its lifetime. This is hastened by the high-temperature environment of the brakes.

Brake Pad Anti Squeal Lubricant Grease for caliper pistons clips Metal-Free Permanent Libricant Grease for Brake Assemblies High-performance lubricants for brakes must withstand heavy strains and guarantee long-term reliability. Bosch Superfit ideally satisfies these requirements and offers many added advantages: Extremely low level of oil separation Far less paste formation than with comparable products High wash-out resistance Excellent thermal properties Not sensitive to heat and cold No metals and acids and non-conductive and therefore ideal for vehicles with ABS Non-corrosive and compatible with all metals and the majority of rubber materials Perfectly suited to steel and aluminum brake calipers Suitable for a variety of other applications e.g.

So, what are your alternatives if you lose, damage or break a spring clip? 1- You can fabricate one from similar diameter piano wire. They won't be pretty but they will do the job. 2- You can post here on Spyderlovers and see if there is a blessed soul who can supply you with one.

I bought my truck (2004 f150, fx4) new in november of 03. Just replaced the pads and rotors on the front (this will be the third set of pads). There were none of these springs on there.

The caliper mounting bracket is bolted to the spindle, and holds the brake pads in position relative to the brake rotor. The caliper fits over the pads and is fastened to the brackets with special sliding bolts. These bolts usually have dust boots. When the brakes are applied, the caliper piston squeezes the pads against the rotor creating friction. STEP 6: Remove the bolts fastening the caliper to the caliper mounting bracket. Gently slide it out and away from the rotor. Hang the caliper inside the wheel well using a coat hanger, so that the hose is not stressed.

Unique Functional Products, UFP as they are commonly known, offers two different series of disc brakes. They offer a DB-35 and a DB-42 and since the parts are not interchangeable it is essential to be able to identify what you have. DB-35 Th e DB-35 visually appears more similar to an automotive caliper.

Some automakers stamp notches and posts that index and stake the shim on the pad. Certain manufacturers of shims use pressure-sensitive adhesives to secure the shim to the backing plate. But over time, moisture and heat can destroy the adhesive. One new design to secure the shim to pads is clips that clamp on to the sides of the backing plate. These clips reduce the tendency of the shim to shift or fall out during the life of the brake linings.

Caliper clip products are most popular in North America, Western Europe, and Domestic Market. You can ensure product safety by selecting from certified suppliers, including 66 with ISO9001, 32 with ISO/TS16949, and 28 with ISO14001 certification.

Brake fluid will be released through the bleeder. Then loosen and remove the C-clamp. Close the bleeder screw for now. If you cannot open the bleeder screw, then push the C-clamp in slowly to prevent unsafe back pressure and damage to the ABS modulator, brake valving or master cylinder.

A disc brake assembly is composed of a caliper, two brake pads, and a rotor. The caliper works on pressurized brake fluid through a piston in the caliper.

This can lead to uneven and premature pad wear, rotor wear and pulling. On some floating calipers, the most neglected piece of hardware is the clip in the bridge. Shims Insulating the brake pad from the caliper can be done two ways. The first option is to go the “chemical” route with sprays or paste coatings. This type of noise solution involves coating the back of the pad prior to installation. The coating serves as a layer between the pad and caliper.

The rotor thickness should be measured and compared to the minimum discard thickness that is etched on the rotor. If the thickness is less than this minimum, then the rotor should be replaced. STEP 8: The next step is to move the piston back inside the caliper.

I then hook one side in and use pliers under the rag to stretch the spring into place. The rear pistons need to be screwed in. You can get the tool pretty much anywhere. I got mine at sears. Be sure to grease the front slide pins.

It doesn't matter if you're a super-speed track racer, a hard-working pickup driver, or a minivan-operating soccer mom - you need a reliable, fresh set of brakes to do your thing safely. After a while your brakes may lose their bite, or they'll start squealing and screeching like crazy. If that's happening to you, it's time to install a new set of performance brake pads. Following the instructions below, it's not too hard to install your brake pads by yourself - and you'll save a big hunk of cash that way, as well. Finding The For Your Vehicle The key to maximizing your stopping power, safety, and performance is choosing the right brake pads for your particular vehicle and driving style. Our performance brake pads are specially formulated and designed for particular vehicle types and particular tasks. If you're looking for heavy-duty stopping power for towing and high payloads, check out Hawk Superduty Brake Pads.

The tension is very high and we used a flathead to pry it off easily but it doesn't go back on!!! A friend of mine thinks the clips are used only at the factory to make the caliper install easier but are not actually needed on the street??? I was forced to drive it home(80 miles)without those clips and the brakes seemed fine and made no funny noises etc. I also took a look and they seem to be braking in evenly.

Mike Very reasonable an logical. I wish it were that simple.

• Before lowering the caliper back in place, use a C-clamp or some wood to push the caliper's piston(s) down to make room for the new, larger pad. • Slip the caliper over the brake rotor, and re-install the hardware.

As materials wear, instead of being round they are flattened by the torque from the brakes into an oval shape that can cause excessive caliper movement. This can cause noise like rattles and thumps even if the brakes are not applied. Always inspect and replace if necessary any dust boots or grommets that protect caliper bolts or slides. If the soft parts look OK, clean out all the old lubricant and replace with new lubricant.

The truck is a 2004. I bought it in 2003. The caliper assembly has anti rattle clips that snap into it. I can clearly see the holes in the new pads and how the spring clips would go in there. I will probably buy the spring clips and put them in. Why would ford do this and the OEM pad manufacturer not include them? Funny thing is, i live in nj, tons of stop and go traffic and only needed to replace the pads every 60,000 miles.

That is why I recommend using a rag to surround them and the area around them when removing or installing them. Still, there are a number of us who don't do that and lose a clip (or 2). So, what to do? For awhile last year the EBC pad sets I was getting had spring clips included. It was a very pleasant surprise to me and to my customers.

Omnisphere 2. Happy stopping! This page was written.

They also have the potential to reduce pulsation complaints. Caliper Brackets Caliper brackets corrosion can occur when the caliper is exposed to road de-icing salt. Corrosion on the lands and slides should be removed with a wire brush or wheel. If the corrosion is not removed, it can cause the pads to bind even if a stainless steel abutment clip is on top of it. Also, clean the sealing surfaces around the caliper guide pin.

Pad Separators More and more OEMs are including springs that are designed to push the pad away from the rotor after the piston retracts. These clips can increase fuel economy while eliminating brake noise.

You can get the tool pretty much anywhere. I got mine at sears.

1- You can fabricate one from similar diameter piano wire. They won't be pretty but they will do the job.

You can also download a PDF copy of this guide. Ninety percent of the brake pad changes you make during the life of your vehicle will be to the front brakes because they do 60% to 70% of the braking. On most cars, you can look through the openings on the outside of the wheel/rim assembly to see the pads. On some vehicles, you may have to remove the wheel to see the pads. Look at it from above or the side. The pad will be pressed against the shiny metal rotor.

I lost one once and I noticed with out the spring the caliper can rotate up out of place. Brakes are something you never take chances with. The spring on the front calipers is a pain in the ass. I put a rag over the caliper and spring in case it tries to fly off. I then hook one side in and use pliers under the rag to stretch the spring into place. The rear pistons need to be screwed in. You can get the tool pretty much anywhere.

Is this true??? Yes, from what I've researched.the pads and calipers are the same but the rotors are slightly smaller.(10.9' compared to 11.8') I was able to find some pics at Focus Fanatic that showed the correct placement of the clip.with the pics it only took about 5 mins on each side to install the retainer clips!!!

It may be necessary to drain some fluid from the master cylinder reservoir. STEP 9: Check and replace all hardware as needed. Improper hardware can lead to noise or poor brake pad performance. Clean the caliper rails or hardware slides where the pads make contact. Clean the hub-mating surface with a wire brush. Rust or debris on the hub can cause rotor run out and lead to wheel vibration. STEP 10: Resurface the rotor or replace the rotor.

Be careful not to scratch, mar, or bend your brake disc. And be careful to exert pressure *straight* on the piston, as much as possible. Reinstall the road wheel. Get in the car and pump the brakes a few times. Since the new pads were installed with a loose fit initially, your brakes will feel squishy for a few strokes until the pads come into contact with the disc.

You can contact EBC here and ask them about the spring clip issue for the Can-Am Spyder. Together, maybe we can get an answer. And more importantly. Maybe some positive action!

The brake drum completely encloses a drum brake assembly, and the friction and heat created during brake use can turn the inside of the drum into an oven, baking your brake hardware. Hardware that appears OK can become fatigued from heat and use over time, resulting in brake shoes that aren’t held in the proper position on the backing plate, don’t retract properly after application, and don’t stay in adjustment. This can cause drag, excessive pedal travel, and poor brake performance.
